Little Wire (or, The Downside of the Internet)

Dec 3, 2003; KASSEL, Germany (AFP) — "A self-confessed cannibal went on trial in Germany accused of murdering a victim [he met on the internet] who was apparently willing to be killed, carved up and eaten in front of a running video camera."

********

Perhaps he had dreams of his own hand
Wrapped in plastic, and nestled neatly
In a white styrofoam tray
The housewives mussing and fussing
Looking with disapproval over the meat
One picks up his hand
Holds it in her own and asks the butcher
Is this the leanest cut you have?

Perhaps he opened the refrigerator door
And climbed naked inside
A watermelon in his lap
As he pulls the door closed
Sitting there in the cold and the dark
With his feet in the butter and his
Hair stringy with jam
Imagining himself
A rebellious side dish
Dreaming of microwave heaven

Or perhaps he smiled
Thinking of himself
As the center of attention
At a glorious Thanksgiving day feast
Perfectly roasted brown and succulent
Let us give thanks, Dad says, as he
Carves the first exquisite slice

Meanwhile, a continent away

Perhaps he dreamed of kissing a lover
Tasting the tongue in his mouth, tumbling playfully
With his own until slowly his teeth
Close and his mouth is filled with
Blood and wiggling flesh

Perhaps he dreamed of dancing dancing dancing
With a faceless stranger
Twirling and spinning across the floor
Until dizziness and love turn to hunger
And desire turns to an ache to carry
His lover in his belly like a child
And dance together forever on a single pair of feet

Perhaps he used colorful terms to his lovers
I want to drink you in
I could eat you up
I want you inside me
    Totally and forever inside me
And perhaps he always
    Always swallows
        The juices of his lovers
            The blessed fluids of life
        And feels joined to the
            Machinery of the universe

An ocean apart
One dreamed of dissolution
One dreamed of absorption
And the universe conspired
In it's infinite wisdom
To keep them forever a world apart
For as long as the sun
Could never shine on them both
As long as they could never
Take that forbidden step
They both
Could survive
Their terrible dreams

And all would have been well forever
    Except for
        See
    There was this wire
        This little
            Underwater
                Wire
    And a flashing icon
        In an e-mail box
    The universe
        Simply never counted
            On that
